In recent years, the business world has turned its attention to positive, moral styles of leadership that seek to make companies more innovative and successful, and make work feel more meaningful for employees.

Waikato Management School Executive Education is pleased to host a free public talk on 'servant leadership' by a world-renowned expert in this field on Tuesday, 28 March, from 1-2pm.

The guest speaker is Dr Robert Liden, Professor of Management at the University of Illinois in Chicago, who has consulted for a wide range of organisations in the United States. He will speak on the topic 'The Paradox of Serving and Leading - a new direction for the future of leadership.' If you'd like to attend the talk, please RSVP by email by Friday, 24 March.

Dr Liden says servant leadership is a new style of leadership based on the paradox of both 'serving' and 'leading' employees at the same time. It is regarded as having enormous potential to make a positive impact on people's job performance and organisational effectiveness.

The leadership style at the top of an organisation can determine whether staff have a deep personal investment in their work, whether they take initiative, exercise critical judgment and try to push a firm forward, or whether they merely feel like cogs in a machine, says Dr Liden.

Any organisation grounded in strong customer relations stands to benefit from the ripple effects of having 'servant leaders', he says.

This event is part of Executive Education's Excellence in Practice lecture series 2017, featuring industry leaders from organisations throughout New Zealand talking about their experiences.

The talk is likely to be of interest to both business leaders and academics studying in this field.

Dr Liden is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and was awarded their 'Eminent Leadership Scholar Award' in 2015. Watch a video of him talking about servant leadership here on YouTube.
