Action-Learning Opportunity

We will offer you the opportunity to work for an executive in a New Zealand business.   You will learn how business operates and you will network outside of the Waikato Management School.   This connects your studies to the practical workplace.  It teaches you what New Zealand firms look for in their staff.

Each action-learning project will require a group to work for up to a month within an organisation.   Prior to this, you will be prepared wth relevant sessions on how to carry out an action research project.

At Waikato Management School, we focus on practically relevant education and a strong connection to business.  We want our graduates to develop skills that support their job search both here and overseas.  For a selected group of high achievers, we will arrange for month-long internships at New Zealand firms.    Working under the guidance of an experience former CEO/Chair, participants will deliver management value to companies.    They will be recognised for this work with a special reference letter.  To qualify for these internships, you must maintain a high grade average and have communication and practical skills to support this channelling position.

Students have the choice of completing the MBM over a 12 month period or can add a further 6 months of study to specialise in a specific business related area. You will gain the skills and understanding required for effective management incorporating your particular chosen field of specialisation. You will have a well-grounded understanding of general management and a chosen discipline or specialisation that includes key concepts of the discipline, the analysis of case studies and the ability to engage with business and management in your chosen area of specialisation.

Students may enrol in the MBMS initially, or may transfer from the MBM programme. As well as providing the structured programme in general management that is part of the MBM, the MBMS provides an initial postgraduate programme in a specific field of study. To complete the MBMS students will choose a particular field of study and undertake a coherent programme with a total value of not fewer than 60 points at 500 level within that discipline in addition to the 180 points required by the MBM programme.

Samuel Mackenzie
Project Manager, Healthshare

My background is nursing in the field of palliative care and a few years ago I realised there were benefits to be gained from combining my health-care skills with a business qualification. I enrolled in a Master of Business and Management (MBM) at the University of Waikato and I haven’t looked back.

Following graduation I was appointed business analyst in the Mental Health Service at Waikato Hospital where I worked on a number of projects that focused on the implementation and analysis of management systems currently used in the service.

I was transferred to the Catalyst team to do additional projects and continue work on my main project where I had identified areas for improvement. Now I am a project manager at Healthshare; a shared service agency assisting the five Midland DHBs to pursue and achieve their regional goals predominantly focusing in the elective field.

My MBM study has helped me every step of the way. The course content is relevant and covers a wide range of business topics with equal measure given to hard and soft skills and I now have a much better appreciation of the potential implications of financial and legal decisions, and the finer points of contracts.   It has also aided me to become a more confident presenter which has been particularly useful when I have presented to senior management, nationally and internationally.

The diversity of cultures among participants makes you consider and appreciate different points of view and increases understanding about how business is done in other countries.

I think it’s the combination of a well set-out curriculum, exceptional, dedicated and knowledgeable tutors and support staff, and a wide-reaching array of international, skilled, and helpful alumni, that sets Waikato apart. It sits in the top 2% of universities in the world, and it’s certainly shaped my career and presented me with new prospects for progression into increasingly interesting and exciting roles.
